NHK reported this morning that the MHLW has decided not to allow seriously ill COVID-19 patients to be released from the hospital until 15 days after the onset of symptoms. The network said the MHLW allows non-seriously ill COVID-19 patients to be discharged from the hospital without being tested when 10 days have passed since the onset of symptoms and 72 hours since their symptoms have become less severe because the risk of infecting others is low at that point. However, the ministry has decided that seriously ill patients who have been on ventilators or ECMO machines will not be allowed to be discharged until 15 days have passed since the onset of symptoms and will be requested to make efforts not to infect others such as by staying in a private room until 20 days have passed since the onset of symptoms. The network said the MHLW is planning to inform local municipalities of the new policy soon.
