On Feb. 20, the Okinawa Police arrested on the spot a 21-year-old lance corporal affiliated with the U.S. Marine Corps’ Camp Foster on suspicion of violating the Road Traffic Law (driving under the influence of alcohol). The suspect reportedly denies the charge, saying, “I drank beer but did not drive.” Alcohol of about four times the legal limit was detected on the suspect’s breath. The suspect was arrested on charges of driving a passenger car under the influence of alcohol on a municipal road in the Chatan district of Chatan Town at around 11:50 p.m. on Feb. 19. The fact that the suspect had been drinking came to light during questioning after the police stopped a car that was being driven with its lights off.
