All national papers reported that the governors of Osaka, Hyogo, Kyoto, Aichi, and Gifu decided yesterday to ask the central government today to lift the state of emergency for their prefectures by the end of this month in view of the continued decline in new cases of the coronavirus. The GOJ is set to study the request carefully and make a decision this week while taking into account various factors, such as the status of local healthcare capacities and detection of emerging strains of the virus nationwide. Yomiuri quoted an unnamed top GOJ official as saying, “There should be no problem with lifting it if the governors are okay with that,” while Asahi projected that the GOJ will decide on Friday to lift the state of emergency for those prefectures on Feb. 28.
