Face mask design contest held to deepen Japan-U.S. ties

New York, March 2 (Jiji Press)–A face mask design contest themed on Japan-U.S. relationship was held in the United States recently amid the new coronavirus pandemic.

The competition, held between December last year and this month, was organized by the Japan Foundation’s New York office at a time when the use of face masks is spreading to prevent infections with the virus.

Nine designs, including those featuring the Statue of Liberty, cherry blossoms and ramen, won prizes.

Judges, including officials from a unit of Uniqlo fashion chain operator Fast Retailing Co. <9983>, a museum and an art university, evaluated a total of 210 designs submitted in the contest. Contest participants themselves were also allowed to cast votes to pick prize-winning designs.

Face masks with the nine designs will be duplicated for donation to nonprofit organizations and other groups.
