Tokyo, March 3 (Jiji Press)–A ruling Liberal Democratic Party heavyweight on Wednesday called on the government to draw up a law to support the Japan Coast Guard’s response to Chinese government ships entering waters around the Japanese-administered Senkaku Islands.

“The Coast Guard is making every effort (in responding to such Chinese ships), but we need to allow it to operate based on legal grounds,” Gen Nakatani, former defense minister, said at a meeting of his LDP faction.

Last month, the government came up with a law interpretation that the Coast Guard is allowed to fire not just warning but “harming” shots at foreign government ships if they intrude into Japanese waters to land on the Senkaku Islands.

Nakatani suggested that such a law interpretation was not enough.
