The push for electric vehicles and green energy is driving the development of battery technology. Manufacturers in the industry have descended on Tokyo for an exhibition to show their latest developments.

More than 100 companies from Japan and around the world are taking part in the three-day event.

Hitachi Zosen is displaying an all solid-state battery. It can withstand extreme temperatures ranging from minus 40 degrees Celsius to over 100.

The company hopes it will be used in satellites and at the international space station.

Solid-state batteries are said to have a greater capacity than conventional lithium ion batteries that use liquid material.

Toyota Motor is displaying a fuel cell system powered by hydrogen and oxygen.

Honda Motor is exhibiting a rechargeable battery that’s swappable.

Governments and manufacturers are pursuing development of batteries. They expect demand to rise amid efforts to cut carbon emissions.
