Dismissal of senior official deals blow to Suga administration

All national dailies reported on the decision on Monday by Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Takeda to oust Vice Minister for Policy Coordination Taniwaki from his position following the finding that he was treated to expensive meals by NTT. In an interim report on the scandal, the ministry said he very likely violated the ethics code for government officials. The papers speculated that the scandal will likely deal a blow to the Suga administration because Taniwaki has played a key role in implementing the nation’s telecommunications policy for almost two decades and has been involved in Prime Minister Suga’s initiative to lower mobile phone fees and Japan’s development of a 6G network.
