NHK and TV Asahi reported that Chargé d’Affaires Young and several former U.S. ambassadors to Japan jointly posted a video message on Twitter on the 10th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake. TV Asahi showed CDA Young saying in the video: “On this day of remembrance and mourning, we pledge to honor the memory of those who were lost, support the ongoing recovery of Tohoku, and continue to build on this most important of our alliances.” Ambassador Roos said: “As an American Ambassador in Japan during March 11, it was the honor of my life to be part of Operation Tomodachi…. America stands unwavering in our commitment to come to Japan’s aid should the need arise.” Ambassador Kennedy said she has watched the bonds between the two nations “grow ever stronger during the past decade” and that she is “certain that the tradition of cooperation that arose from that day will continue to flourish.” Ambassador Hagerty said: “I applaud the people of Tohoku for their remarkable resilience and the tremendous progress they made toward rebuilding.” NHK said that at the end of the video, the Ambassadors said in Japanese: “Issho ni gambarimasho (Let’s work together).”
