U.S. destroyer transits through strait between China, Taiwan

TAIPEI — A U.S. Navy destroyer passed through the strait between China and Taiwan in the southerly direction, the Defense Ministry of the self-ruled island said Thursday.

The Navy’s 7th Fleet said the guided-missile destroyer John Finn conducted a routine transit through the Taiwan Strait on Wednesday local time, adding it “demonstrates the U.S. commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.”

“The United States military will continue to fly, sail and operate anywhere international law allows,” it added.

China regards Taiwan as a renegade province awaiting unification, by force if necessary.

The U.S. administration of President Joe Biden has urged the Chinese government to stop intimidating Taiwan by military, diplomatic and economic means, while assuring the island of Washington’s “rock-solid” support.
