Nikkei wrote that the Japanese pharmaceutical maker Daiichi Sankyo will begin clinical testing of its COVID-19 vaccine candidate later this month, noting that the company is working on the first domestically developed messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine in Japan. The paper wrote that while the vaccine is unlikely to become available for use until fiscal 2022 or later, Japan is expediting the domestic production of vaccines to reduce its dependence on foreign products.
