TOKYO – Highlights of Japan-related events for March 15-21:


March 15 (Mon)

— Cabinet Office to release machinery orders data for January.


March 16 (Tues)

— Japan, United States to hold “two-plus-two” foreign and defense ministerial meeting in Tokyo.

The two allies are expected to discuss issues related to China including its new maritime security law that allows its coast guard ships to use weapons against foreign vessels in waters Beijing sees as its territory.


March 17 (Wed)

— Finance Ministry to release preliminary customs-cleared trade statistics for February.

— Japan Tourism Agency to release data on number of foreigners visiting Japan in February.

— Many major Japanese companies to reply to labor union requests in annual “shunto” spring wage negotiations.

— Sapporo District Court to rule on compensation demanded by three same-sex couples against government for law prohibiting their marriage.

— Osaka District Court to hand down decision on request by citizens to halt three nuclear power plants run by Kansai Electric Power arguing taking shelter in event of an accident would be unsuitable during coronavirus pandemic.


March 18 (Thurs)

— Bank of Japan to hold monetary policy meeting through March 19.

The central bank is reviewing its policy tools to seek ways to better attain its elusive 2 percent inflation target. But Governor Haruhiko Kuroda said at a parliamentary committee earlier this month the central bank will not change an implicit band set for its long-term interest rate target.

— Official campaigning to start for Akita gubernatorial election.

— Hiroshima High Court to issue judgment over appeal by Shikoku Electric Power against earlier provisional injunction to halt operation of No. 3 reactor at Ikata nuclear power plant in Ehime Prefecture.

The unit has been offline for regular maintenance since late 2019. The initial court decision was handed down in 2020 that the company’s risk assessment was inadequate and prevented its unit from restarting.


March 19 (Fri)

— BOJ chief Kuroda to hold press conference.

— Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications to release national consumer price index for February.


March 20 (Sat)

— Spring Equinox Day national holiday.

— Japan marks 26th anniversary of sarin gas attack on Tokyo subway system by AUM Shinrikyo cult.


March 21 (Sun)

— Chiba gubernatorial election to be held.

— The ruling Liberal Democratic Party to hold convention in Tokyo.
