Executive Deputy President Naoto Ohmi of the Japanese Trade Union Confederation (Rengo) visited the Prime Minister’s Office (Kantei) on March 12 to urge the administration to ratify the International Labor Organization’s “Convention concerning Discrimination in Respect of Employment and Occupation,” which prohibits discrimination in employment and occupation based on race, gender, and other factors.

Rengo expressed its view that Japan’s ratification of the convention is important to alleviate the international community’s concern about Japan’s understanding of human rights. Doubt was cast on Japan’s understanding after former President of the Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Yoshiro Mori made discriminatory remarks against women.
