The Africa Society of Japan, a general incorporated association working to promote economic and cultural exchange between Japan and Africa, held a symposium in Tokyo on March 16 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of its founding. Koichiro Matsuura, the association’s chairman and former director-general of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), said in his keynote speech: “China is boosting its strength tremendously (in Africa), but Japan is a forerunner. I hope the relationship [between Japan and Africa] will be deepened on the private-sector level.” Koji Yonetani, director-general of the African Affairs Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said, “The partnership with Africa needs to be expanded for the sake of Japan’s vitality.”

The association was established in 1960 and is comprised of 57 companies and groups, including trading houses and banks.
