South Korean Ambassador to Japan Kang Chang-il paid a courtesy visit to the Yomiuri Shimbun’s Tokyo headquarters on March 22 and met with Shoichi Oikawa, chairman of the Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings and senior deputy editor-in-chief. Regarding the lawsuits filed by former requisitioned workers (former laborers from the Korean Peninsula) and former South Korean comfort women, Kang said he has “confirmed the intention” of South Korean President Moon Jae-in to resolve the issue.

Kang said, “The government cannot intervene in judicial decisions, so we are making preparations to reach a political settlement.” He added that if [South Korea] can hold dialogue with the Japanese government, “the problem can be resolved. In the dialogue, we can take an attitude of listening to the assertions of the Japanese government.” Kang assumed his post in January.
