URUMA—The Uruma City Council (Chair: Masakazu Kochi) unanimously adopted a written protest and opinion regarding an incident in February in which a U.S. Marine from Camp Courtney was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault. The council demanded that an apology and full compensation be provided to the victim as soon as possible.

The documents claimed that the U.S. military’s entirely inadequate system of management is the cause of the repeated incidents involving U.S. military and affiliated personnel and requested tighter discipline by the military along with the convening of a joint working team tasked with preventing such accidents and incidents from recurring.

The written protest was addressed to the commander of the U.S. Forces in Japan and the opinion was addressed to the prime minister and foreign minister.
