U.S. military in Okinawa not testing for new strains of COVID-19

Okinawa Times and Ryukyu Shimpo reported on the disclosure by a prefectural government official in charge of public health that he was told by the U.S. Naval Hospital in Okinawa that its PCR diagnostic testing does not cover emerging strains of COVID-19. The official made the disclosure during a prefectural assembly session yesterday. In response to an assembly member’s expression of concern about the possible spread of variants among service members, the official noted that he will ask the U.S. military to screen for such strains.
