At a press conference on March 30, Natsuo Yamaguchi, chief representative of Komeito, indicated he is opposed to imposing sanctions on China over human rights issues in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. “[Imposing sanctions] could unnecessarily invite diplomatic issues if we have no certifiable grounds based on evidence for accusing China of human rights violations,” he commented.

“China is Japan’s largest trade partner, and we have a vast amount of interaction with this neighbor,” Yamaguchi emphasized. “The depth [of our ties] is entirely different from that of the European countries (implementing the sanctions on China).”
