Japan’s health ministry has begun discussing how to conduct the country’s first clinical trial of medical cannabis. The medical use of cannabis is currently restricted under Japanese law.

The start of the discussions was reported on Wednesday at a meeting of the ministry’s expert panel on cannabis use.

The ministry says a research team has discussed specific methods for conducting the clinical trial. The team is planning to draw up a report by the end of May.

Medical products derived from cannabis plants have been approved in the United States and other countries. They include drugs for treating intractable epilepsy.
