Broadcasters led with reports on the more than 3,000 new COVID-19 cases confirmed nationwide on Wednesday (NHK), Tokyo’s plan to begin preparations to ask the GOJ to allow the governor to take stronger steps to contain the spread of COVID-19 (NTV), a record 878 new COVID-19 cases confirmed in Osaka yesterday (TBS, TV Asahi), and Tokyo Governor Koike’s announcement yesterday that Tokyo could have more than 4,000 new cases of COVID-19 per day in mid-May if the daily tally were to increase by 50% per week (Fuji TV).  

 

Top stories in national dailies included Tokyo’s plan to ask the central government to put it under a quasi-state of emergency (Asahi, Sankei), a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases involving new variants in the Kansai region (Yomiuri), the GOJ’s plan to decide in a few days whether to discharge wastewater from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the ocean (Mainichi), and CVC Capital Partners’ $20 billion buyout offer to Toshiba (Nikkei).
