Nikkei ran a recent telephone interview with Rep. Ami Bera, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, Central Asia, and Nonproliferation. The paper wrote that Rep. Bera said that discussions are taking place in Congress on economic measures to be taken by the United States to deter China from using force against Taiwan. He was quoted as saying that the United States is discussing the economic consequences China may face if it attempted to invade Taiwan. The paper wrote that although the U.S. lawmaker did not elaborate on the details of the discussions, the move is probably aimed at sending a message to Beijing.
