Mainichi wrote that the GOJ is making arrangements to raise its 2030 target for greenhouse gas emissions reduction to around 45% from the fiscal 2013 level, a drastic reduction from the government’s original target of 26%. The paper wrote that the GOJ is planning to make a formal decision on the new target at a taskforce meeting to be held on April 20 or later. The paper wrote, however, that it may be difficult for the Kantei, METI, and the Environment Ministry to reach a consensus. The paper speculated that the move is aimed at having Japan take the lead in global efforts to reduce emissions by setting a high target ahead of the climate change summit to be hosted by President Biden on April 22-23.
