Prime Minister Suga unlikely to dissolve Lower House for snap election in spring

Yomiuri wrote that it has learned from multiple GOJ and LDP sources that Prime Minister Suga will probably forgo dissolving the Lower House for a snap general election in the spring due to the need to focus on a response to the recent nationwide resurgence of COVID-19. The paper speculated that the premier may consider holding a snap election either on July 4 at the same time as the Tokyo assembly elections or after the Paralympics end on Sept. 5.

The paper also wrote that the results of the elections for vacant House of Councillors seats in Nagano and Hiroshima on April 25 will have a major impact on Suga’s policy implementation in the future, speculating that Suga may lose his grip on power if the LDP loses both seats.
