NHK, NTV, and TV Asahi reported at noon that Chairman Omi of the GOJ subcommittee on the new coronavirus said at the Diet this morning that he has “no objection to calling [the current infection situation] a fourth wave.” He also reportedly said the GOJ will need to consider the option of declaring a state of emergency once again if the current quasi-state of emergency measures fail to reduce the number of new cases.

Meanwhile, when asked by an opposition party member if the current infection situation constitutes a fourth wave, Prime Minister Suga refrained from using the term by saying: “We are not seeing a major surge in infections nationwide at this point. But we are seeing a rapid outbreak mainly in Kansai and certain regions, and the government believes it is necessary to respond with a strong sense of caution.”
