Tokyo, April 14 (Jiji Press)–Major Japanese apparel firm Sanyo Shokai Ltd. <8011> said Wednesday that it has confirmed the use of cotton produced in Xinjiang in products under its multiple brands.

“From the viewpoint of corporate social responsibility, we’d like to consider using alternative materials if we judge (the use of the cotton) to be inappropriate,” amid growing concerns over human rights abuses in China’s Xinjiang Uighur autonomous region, Sanyo Shokai President Shinji Oe told a news conference.

The company did not disclose the names of the brands in question.

Criticism is growing internationally against apparel firms for the use of Xinjiang cotton produced with forced labor of the Uighur ethnic minority.

Fast Retailing Co.’s <9983> Uniqlo Co. arm has been accused in France of exploiting Uighur labor along with other leading clothing and footwear companies.
