On April 14, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) announced that it will assign additional spectrum in the high-speed fifth generation (5G) mobile telecommunications network to Rakuten Mobile. The company plans to utilize the allocated spectrum for 4G from around March 2023 and for 5G from around March 2025. Rakuten Mobile will utilize the spectrum to expand its 5G network in regions other than the Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya urban areas.
To date, 5G spectra have been assigned to NTT Docomo, KDDI (au), Softbank, and Rakuten Mobile. All four companies launched 5G services in spring of 2020. (Abridged)
