Yomiuri front-paged a GOJ plan to establish a research entity focusing on economic security, saying that it will be modeled after the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. The new thinktank, which will be launched under the supervision of the Cabinet Office, will collect and analyze data on advanced dual-use technology in coordination with the National Security Secretariat, the Defense Ministry, and METI, as well as similar research organizations abroad. The GOJ has reportedly concluded that such an agency needs to be set up in view of the leakage of scientific expertise to China and the difficulty in using domestic civilian technology for national defense purposes.
