Rakuten CEO rejects concern over Tencent’s investment

Saturday’s Asahi, Nikkei, and Mainichi wrote that in response to the U.S. and Japanese governments’ reported plans to more closely monitor the operations of major online retailer Rakuten following Chinese IT giant Tencent’s investment in the company, Rakuten CEO Mikitani told reporters on Friday that he does not understand why this is viewed as a problem. “Rakuten isn’t accepting any board members from Tencent,” Mikitani said. “The Chinese company has also invested in Tesla and other companies. It’s a type of venture capital.”
