Sunday’s Yomiuri wrote that it has learned from a source connected to organizers of the Tokyo Olympics that the International Olympic Committee estimates that about 60% of the approximately 10,000 athletes set to participate in the Tokyo Games will likely be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 ahead of their arrival in Japan. The source expressed hope that the safety of the Games will increase if nations move forward with vaccinating their athletes, noting that some of the countries have already began inoculating them. According to the source, the United States and South Korea have announced their plans to administer vaccines to athletes, and the IOC announced during a five-way meeting with the GOJ, Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the Tokyo organizing committee, and International Paralympic Committee on April 28 that more than half of the 200 nations and regions participating in the Tokyo Olympics are planning to vaccinate their athletes prior to the Games.
