All national dailies wrote that Prime Minister Suga reiterated his willingness to host safe and secure Olympics and Paralympics this summer at an Upper House Budget Committee session on Monday. Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan leader Edano said at the Diet session that it would be unacceptable if holding the Games were to result in allowing new variants of the coronavirus to be brought to Japan from abroad and that it will be impossible to hold the Games in Tokyo while protecting the lives, health, and livelihoods of the Japanese people. However, Suga said in response that the government will require athletes and others participating in the Tokyo Games to comply with strict preventive measures against the virus, including daily testing, segregation from the public, and punishment by disqualification for violating regulations.
