Saturday’s Nikkei wrote that the Health Ministry unveiled a plan on Friday to enhance its coronavirus diagnostic testing capacity, including antigen tests, so that as many as 772,000 samples can be processed nationwide per day during a future resurgence. While noting that the current capacity of 201,000 PCR tests per day will be doubled to almost 450,000, the daily quoted a ministry spokesperson as saying: “It’s difficult to tell whether the maximum number of tests can actually be conducted.”

The business daily wrote in a separate piece that an increasing number of Japanese colleges and universities are providing PCR or antigen tests for students amid the rapid spread of the highly transmissible strains of the virus that afflict youths as well as older people. University administrators reportedly consider aggressive testing to be critical to head off cluster infections on campus and conduct classes in person.
