Yomiuri wrote that the ruling LDP has put together a package of recommendations aimed at the domestic development of novel coronavirus vaccines. It called for the Suga administration to appoint a cabinet minister in charge of the development, strengthen inter-agency coordination for R&D, and deepen partnership with Asian countries to conduct joint clinical tests of Japanese vaccines at home and abroad. Alarmed by the situation in which the country currently has no choice but to rely on foreign products, the ruling party reportedly considers the development of domestic vaccines a “matter of extreme urgency.”

Asahi carried a similar story, adding that the GOJ has already decided to join hands with Asian partners to conduct large-scale trials of Japanese vaccines against emerging infectious diseases since Japanese people’s racial features are closer to theirs than Caucasians, Hispanics, and others. The GOJ is also considering adopting a system similar to the U.S.’s emergency use authorization to roll out innovative new drugs during future pandemics without delay.
