Asahi, Mainichi, and Sankei took up the disclosure by Administrative Reform Minister Kono yesterday that a total of 30 prefectural and major municipal governments plan to establish large-scale COVID-19 vaccination centers of their own to put shots in arms at a much higher speed. He said the central government will help them finance the launch of such centers, which will use the soon-to-be approved Moderna vaccine, adding that the central government will need to consider whether to allow pharmacists to administer vaccines there.

In a related story, Nikkei wrote that the Health Ministry is reluctant to permit pharmacists to administer shots given that the Medical Practitioners Law and other relevant statutes only allow physicians, nurses, and dentists to perform such work. As the ministry has insisted that an amendment to the existing legal regulation would be necessary to allow pharmacists to administer COVID-19 vaccines, the daily said it would be extremely difficult to draft and enact relevant legislation anytime soon because the current Diet session expires on June 16.
