The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) will enhance hub ports for offshore wind power generation with an eye to facilitate increased use of this form of energy. MLIT has already designated Akita and three other ports as hubs for the assembly and maintenance of wind farms, and it will consider designating more. It will build the necessary port infrastructure, as offshore wind power generation is expected to expand its footprint as a main source of renewable energy.
An expert panel started discussions on May 18. Within fiscal 2021, the panel will draw up an outline of the size of new hub ports and areas to be designated and draft regional promotion measures, including attracting offshore wind power generation businesses. (Abridged)
