Saturday’s Asahi and Mainichi reported that many participants in an LDP meeting on Thursday regarding proposed legislation aimed at “promoting understanding” of sexual minorities took issue with the legislation. One member allegedly said LGBT people are “morally wrong,” while former Parliamentary Secretary for Land and Transport Affairs Yana was quoted as saying, “They go against the ‘preservation of the species’ that occurs naturally in biological terms.” These lawmakers also voiced concern that their opinions are being suppressed in the name of political correctness. Yana reportedly refused to comment on the alleged remark on the grounds that he made it during a closed meeting, adding, however, that it is necessary to promote understanding of sexual minorities. According to Mainichi, LGBT supporters have reacted very strongly to the alleged remarks by the ruling party politicians. More than 50,000 people have signed an online petition calling for them to apologize and retract the alleged comments.
