IOC leader’s comment on Tokyo Olympics infuriates some Japanese

Asahi and Mainichi reported that a comment made by International Olympic Committee President Bach about the Tokyo Olympics during an online meeting on Saturday has caused a stir. “The athletes definitely can make their Olympic dreams come true,” he said. “We have to make some sacrifices to make this possible.” Local opponents of the Summer Games, who were also upset when another IOC leader said last week that the event would be convened even under a COVID-19 state of emergency, took Bach’s statement to mean that the IOC is determined to go ahead with the event even at the risk of endangering the health and lives of Japanese people. The IOC later clarified the controversial statement by underscoring that Bach did not mean to call on the people of Japan to make sacrifices.
