All networks reported this morning that the State Department has raised its travel advisory for Japan to the highest level on its four-tier scale—“Level 4: Do Not Travel”—due to the COVID-19 situation here. NHK said the State Department cited the latest update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which says, “Travelers should avoid all travel to Japan.” The CDC reportedly warns that “because of the current situation in Japan, even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants.” The network took up a report by Bloomberg saying that the move is a fresh blow to a country struggling to convince its own public and the international community that it is ready to host the Summer Olympics. The network said the State Department’s highest travel advisory level applied to about 150 nations and territories as of Monday.
