Yomiuri Shimbun has learned that the Japanese government will begin preliminary surveys of coal-powered facilities, which may be suspended or discontinued, from the standpoint of stable power supply. The suspension or discontinuation of coal powered plants, major emitters of carbon dioxide (CO2), is expected to pick up speed amid moves toward decarbonization. To ensure a supply of power and prevent a rapid drop in supply, the government plans to systematically monitor the reduction rate [of coal powered plants]. (Abridged)
