Asahi, Nikkei, and Yomiuri wrote that Tokyo, Osaka, and five other prefectures that are currently under the COVID-19 state of emergency called on the GOJ on Wednesday to extend the measure beyond May 31 in view of the continued strain on hospital capacity. The five other prefectures are Hokkaido, Kyoto, Hyogo, Okayama, and Hiroshima. Fukuoka already requested an extension on Tuesday and Aichi is likely to also seek an extension. The GOJ is planning to make a decision by the end of this week. According to Sankei, Tokyo Governor Koike told reporters on Wednesday that she hopes the emergency will remain in place for about another month.
