Japan pledges additional $800 million for international COVID-19 vaccine effort

All national dailies wrote that during a virtual vaccine summit hosted by Japan and the global vaccine alliance Gavi on Wednesday in which more than 30 nations participated, Prime Minister Suga pledged an additional $800 million on top of Japan’s previous offer of $200 million toward international efforts to ensure the fair distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. The premier also expressed Japan’s readiness to provide some of its AstraZeneca vaccine supplies to developing nations. Yomiuri, Asahi, and Mainichi speculated that Japan’s pledge of its commitment to the worldwide vaccine effort is aimed at countering China’s expanding vaccine diplomacy.
