Nikkan Sports ran an exclusive interview with President Hashimoto of the Tokyo Olympics organizing committee on Wednesday. She underscored that the Games are going forward by categorically ruling out cancellation or further postponement even if another COVID-19 resurgence occurs right before or during the event. “The only reason the Games would not be held is if most athletes were not able to come from overseas on account of a severe infection situation. In other words, there will be no cancellation barring such a scenario.” But she suggested that even if a decision is made in late June to accommodate domestic spectators, they may not be allowed to attend in the end depending on the infection situation in the run-up to the event. The former Olympian claimed that public opposition to the international sporting event has begun to subside, perhaps as a result of the expedited vaccine rollout and people gaining access to more information on the “playbooks” that set forth strict virus prevention protocols for athletes and support staff.
