Monday’s Nikkei led with a report saying the GOJ is making preparations to begin issuing certificates of COVID-19 vaccination this summer to vaccinated residents who plan to go abroad, with the hope that the move will give business travel and other economic activities a boost amid growing moves around the world to use vaccine passports. Some senior Japanese government officials already carry unofficial certificates when they travel to the United States, Europe, or elsewhere because they are increasingly being asked whether they have been vaccinated. An interagency team led by Chief Cabinet Secretary Kato has been accelerating discussions on an official vaccine passport program for businesspeople and others and the panel is considering a plan to start issuing paper certificates this summer followed by a digital version possibly through a smartphone app by the end of the year.
