Saturday’s Mainichi wrote that the Ministry of Defense is considering starting as early as fiscal 2022 the development of a new type of long-range missile that could be fired from vessels and fighter jets. The missile would be based on the first domestically produced long-range missile that Japan is currently developing as a modified version of the Type 12 Surface-to-Ship Missile. With China’s maritime advancement and other factors in mind, Japan will enhance its standoff defense capabilities with which missiles can be launched from outside an enemy’s threat range.
