Sunday’s Mainichi reported that the Okinawa police raided the home of a local academic on June 4 to investigate allegations that he left U.S. military waste collected from the returned portion of the Northern Training Area in front of the facility’s gate on April 7. The collected items reportedly included broken bottles. The police allegedly regarded the act as forcible obstruction of business because the abandoned articles made the passage of military vehicles difficult. The scholar and local peace activists have reacted sharply, calling the police investigation an “overreaction.”
