The Yokohama chapter of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has informed Yokohama Mayor Hayashi Fumiko, 75, of its decision not to back her in the Yokohama mayoral election to be held with the expiration of her present term of office, a source told the Kanagawa Shimbun on June 10. The official campaigning for the mayoral race will start on Aug. 8, and voting will take place on Aug. 22. Regarding the reasons for not extending support, the Yokohama chapter cited concerns about her advanced age and health problems in addition to her having already been elected three times to the position. Hayashi reportedly expressed the desire to seek a fourth term when told of the decision directly by a senior official of the Yokohama chapter. (Abridged)
