All national dailies wrote that the ruling coalition voted down a no-confidence motion against the cabinet of Prime Minister Suga that was submitted to the House of Representatives by four opposition parties on Tuesday. The opposition parties demanded that the current Diet session be extended beyond its scheduled closing on Wednesday to continue discussions on containing the coronavirus pandemic and whether Tokyo should host the Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer. The papers wrote that since the motion was voted down, Suga is likely to concentrate on combating the COVID-19 pandemic until he dissolves the Lower House for a snap general election after the Paralympics end on Sept. 5.
