Japan lodges protest against South Korean military’s drills near Takeshima

Yomiuri, Asahi, Mainichi, and Sankei wrote that South Korea’s military and maritime police conducted joint training on Tuesday in the vicinity of the Liancourt Rocks (known as Takeshima in Japan and Dokdo in South Korea). The drills did not involve a landing exercise. Defense Minister Kishi told reporters on Tuesday that the training was unacceptable because the Takeshima Islands are an integral part of Japan’s territory. MOFA Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau Director-General Funakoshi lodged a protest with a senior official at the South Korean Embassy in Tokyo by phone.
