Okinawa Times and Ryukyu Shimpo highlighted remarks made to the press yesterday by Defense Minister Kishi on the latest leakage of water containing PFOS and other toxic substances from a U.S. Army installation in Uruma. He took issue with the U.S. military’s failure to promptly notify the relevant Japanese authorities. “The delay is regrettable,” the cabinet minister was quoted as saying. “The Japanese government has filed a strong protest with the U.S. side. Early sharing of information is extremely important when dealing with this type of mishap. We are asking the U.S. side to prevent a recurrence while trying to determine what happened.”
