Nikkei reported on remarks made by Defense Minister Kishi at a meeting of a European Parliament subcommittee on security held online on Thursday. Pointing out that China has been increasing its military pressure on Taiwan, Kishi reportedly stressed that the stability of Taiwan is important not only to Japan but also to the entire international community. According to the Ministry of Defense, this was the first time for a Japanese defense minister to attend a meeting of the European Parliament. The Japanese defense minister also said the security of the South China Sea is vital to European countries because around 40% of European countries’ external trade pass through the waters. Referring to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Kishi said that it is necessary for Japan and the EU to work together to respond to challenges from authoritarian regimes. Yomiuri, Asahi, and Sankei ran similar reports.
