The Ministry of the Environment announced it detected organic fluorides, such as PFOS and PFOA, in excess of the ministry’s provisional benchmark values in water samples taken at 21 sites from rivers and groundwater in 12 prefectures. No health damage is expected as the water sampled at those locations is not used for drinking.

The ministry conducted the survey in FY2020 of water taken at 143 sites from rivers and groundwater. The level of organic fluorides was higher than the benchmark value at 21 sites in 12 prefectures: Miyagi, Yamagata, Chiba, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Fukui, Aichi, Osaka, Hyogo, Nara, Okayama, and Okinawa.
