Ryukyu Shimpo and Okinawa Times highlighted remarks made yesterday during a prefectural assembly session by a senior prefectural government official regarding Governor Tamaki’s call for the central government to reduce the “burden rate” of U.S. military facilities in his prefecture from about 70% to 50% or less. Okinawa currently hosts some 70% of all U.S. military installations in Japan. The official said the reversion of the Northern Training Area, Iejima Auxiliary Airfield, Camp Schwab, and Camp Hansen would make it possible to achieve the goal. The official indicated that the return of the four facilities would be ideal since not many residents are employed there and training at these installations has inflicted various types of damage on the local people and environment.
